About WirelessHD™

Broadcom Corporation, Intel Corporation, LG Electronics Inc., Matsushita Electric Industrial Co., Ltd. (Panasonic), NEC Corporation, SAMSUNG ELECTRONICS CO., LTD, SiBEAM, Inc., Sony Corporation and Toshiba Corporation, have joined together to form the WirelessHD™ Consortium, an industry-led effort to define a specification for the next generation wireless digital network interface specification for consumer electronics products. Specifically, the WirelessHD™ has a stated goal of enabling wire.

Why WirelessHD™?

The WirelessHD™ wireless digital interface will serve as the first and only global specification to combine uncompressed high-definition video, multi-channel audio, intelligent format and control data, and Hollywood approved standard content protection techniques. For end-users, elimination of cables for audio and video dramatically simplifies home theater system installation and eliminates the traditional need to locate source devices in the proximity of the display. Also, the technology will support the development of adapter solutions that will be capable of supporting legacy systems.

The WirelessHD™ specification has been architected and optimized for wireless display connectivity, achieving in its first generation implementation high-speed rates up to 4 Gbps at ten meters for the consumer electronics, personal computing and portable device products. Its core technology, based on the 60 GHz millimeter wave frequency band, promotes theoretical data rates as high as 25 Gbps, permitting it to scale to higher resolutions, color depth, and range.

Finally, with WirelessHD™ technology, consumers can easily create a wireless video area network (WVAN) by just ‘flipping a switch,’ and turning on their device. The intelligent device control system automatically discovers each device in the WirelessHD™ network and may be controlled by a standard remote control.
